Particle separation & focusing

Overview

The separation of particles, for example in microfluidic devices, is of great importance for a variety of applications, e.g. disease diagnosis. It is crucial to detect cancer or malaria-infected cells as soon as possible in order to plan treatment during early disease states. But this requires the detection of relatively rare cells in a background of myriads of healthy cells. Cell separation is not without reason a challenging problem and a very active research field.
